Avril & Chad’s Marriage Secret: “We Don’t Drink When We’re Apart”

Avril Lavigne co-wrote her hit single "Here's to Never Growing Up" with her husband, Chad Kroeger ofNickelback, and the lyrics contain several references to getting drunk.  But the couple says that one of the secrets to their happy marriage is that they actually don't drink…unless they're together.

Speaking to People magazine, Avril and Chad, who tied the knot on July 1 after a year of dating, explain that they try to avoid situations which may lead them into temptation because they spend so much time apart due to the demands of their careers.  "We don't go more than two weeks without seeing each other," says Avril, while Chad adds, "And we don't drink when we're apart."

They also don't go clubbing without each other. "We don't want to go anywhere that you're asking for trouble," explains Chad.  Avril laughs, "It sucks!  But when you've got something special, you can't be careless with it."  Chad adds, "This is something that we want to cherish and protect." Awww.

Avril's gearing up for the release of her new album on Tuesday, while Chad and Nickelback have a greatest hits disc coming November 19.  They'll also be touring — separately — this winter, which leads to the question of how they'll find the time to start a family.

"We both want [kids]," says Chad.  "We just need to find a time we're both at home to get around to it."  Avril adds, "With this crazy lifestyle, you relish the time you can be quiet."  When they are at home together in Ontario, they say their favorite activities include watching movies and dining on Avril's home-cooked gourmet meals.  "I've never had anything of hers that wasn't restaurant-worthy," he gushes.
